The Elderly Care Fund: Police. IPA (SA) is committed in assisting where possible the Elderly Care Fund – Police in reporting cases where help is needed for retired policemen. The Fund from time to time presents seminars / information sessions to elderly couples who may encounter certain problems in their future health managements. On the 13th May 2010 an information session on Alzheimer and Parkinson’s disease was held for 70 elderly people who went home with much more knowledge about Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s sickness.
Briefly:-
Parkinson’s is a movement disorder. It is caused by loss of nerve cells or neurons deep in the brain which normally produce Dopamine. Without Dopamine normal movement becomes affected.
Symptoms:-
- Tremor usually when resting;
- Stiffness and muscle cramps particularly in arms, legs and neck;
- Slowness in initiating movements known as Bradykinesia;
- General Aches and pain occur as well as problems with sleeping, memory problems, and problems with drooling, sweating and feeling of anxiety and depression.
Dementia is a physical illness of the brain and as the illness progresses the brain becomes more and more damaged,
Symptoms:-
- Increasing and persistent forgetfulness;
- Memory loss: forget simple things very easily;
- Difficulty with abstract thinking;
- Disorientated in terms of time and place, keep asking the same questions;
- Changes in behavior, mood and personality;
- Increasing dependence on others and struggle to perform the simplest of tasks;
- Difficulty communicating.
